Review & Description

Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’ Read more

Horror Rock N Roll - Short Stories by Cris Hendrix (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

"Jonny took the stage with his signature guitar, smiling and waving at the howlin' crowd with effervescent grace. This was truly a showman if I'd ever seen one, he owned the stage as if nothing else mattered, as if life ceased to exist for anything or anyone not living on that very stage at that very moment.

Jonny plugged in his guitar and let out a howl louder than anything the entire crowd could conjure up, like nothing I'd ever heard before nor would ever want to hear again. The crowd wondered if this were part of the act but I'd surely never seen or heard it like this before."

Six short stories serving as an introduction to author Cris Hendrix and providing a supernatural slant to the music industry.

Complete Early Recordings (Audio CD)

Complete Early Recordings
Complete Early Recordings (Audio CD)
By Skip James

Review & Description

With an unmistakable falsetto delivery, Skip James created some of history's eeriest blues records. His blues sounds dark and mysterious, using odd tunings, structures, and rhythms, and exploring gloomy lyrical themes. Unlike other bluesmen of the day, James's music was personal and bleak, played for his own emotional release and not for purposes of entertainment. "Devil Got My Woman," "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues," "Hard Luck Child," and "Special Rider Blues" convey sorrow and misery like few others can. Uptempo numbers such as the classic "I'm So Glad" and "Drunken Spree," which resembles the hillbilly traditional "Late Last Night," showcase his forceful guitar picking while rags "Little Cow and Calf" and the jumpy "How Long 'Buck'" feature his unique piano work. --Marc Greilsamer Read more

Losers Weepers (Audio CD)
By Etta James

Buy new: $16.71

First tagged by Mr. P "DJ Django"
Customer tags: jazz, blues, jazz blues

Review & Description

This is the second in our series of CD reissues of Etta James' Chess albums. All will include copious bonus tracks.

Etta is one of the greatest-ever singers of soul and R&B, male or female. She spent her glory years at Chess Records of Chicago, releasing 13 marvelous LPs on the company's Argo, Cadet and Chess imprints between 1960 and 1975. Curiously, fewer than half of those long-players have ever been reissued in their entirety on CD.

We began our program to help remedy that shameful oversight earlier this year with Who's Blue?, a collection of largely new-to-CD album tracks and B-sides, and last month marked the release of Etta's 1967 LP Call My Name. Here we turn our attention to her superb Losers Weepers set from 1970.

Recorded in Los Angeles with renowned arranger Gene Barge and veteran producer Ralph Bass at the controls, the original 11-track album is bolstered with a generous 11 bonus titles cut variously in Hollywood, Chicago and Philadelphia between 1969 and 1973. Compilation and notes by Mick Patrick and Dennis Garvey. Read more

Review & Description

Great collection at a great price.Goin' Back traces a century of Crescent City musical history, starting in the mid-19th century with Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a classical composer influenced by the African chants and slave dances he witnessed in New Orleans' Congo Square. With support from some of the city's most prominent musical pioneers (including Danny Barker, Pete Fountain, and the Neville Brothers), Dr. John breathes new life into the work of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, James Booker, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, and Huey Piano Smith. From early jazz to junkie blues, Goin' Back covers it all, ranging from well-trod standards ("Basin Street Blues," "Careless Love") to otherwise forgotten jewels ("I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say," "How Come My Dog Don't Bark"). What's most remarkable is how utterly alive and timeless it sounds. --Keith Moerer Read more

Hoodoo Man Blues (Audio CD)

Hoodoo Man Blues
Hoodoo Man Blues (Audio CD)
By Junior Wells

Review & Description

Hoodoo Man Blues is not only Junior Well's initial LP appearance, it is damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had issued 45's by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc. but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of limitations of juke-box/airplay promotion. Delmark is proud of the part Hoodoo Man Blues played in the popularization of the real Chicago blues and of Junior Wells. But the credit belongs to Junior, Buddy, Jack and Billy - they made the music. We just sat and dug it.

''One of the truly classic blues albums of the 1960s, and one of the first to fully document the smoky ambience of a night at a West Side nightspot in the superior acoustics of a recording studio. Wells just set up with his usual cohorts - guitarist Buddy Guy (billed as 'Friendly Chap' on first vinyl pressings), bassist Jack Myers, and drummer Billy Warren - and proceeded to blow up a storm, bringing an immediacy to Snatch It Back and Hold It, You Don't Love Me, Chitlin con Carne, and the rest of the tracks that is absolutely mesmerizing. - Bill Dahl, ALL MUSIC GUIDE.This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update--still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne." --Robert Gordon Read more

You See Me Laughin' (DVD)
By R.L. Burnside

Review & Description

You See Me Laughin' is a full length documentary that takes a look at the often untamed lifestyles of the last great North Mississippi bluesmen and the Oxford, MS based label- Fat Possum Records- that struggles to record them. The film is an exciting collage of exclusive interviews, live performances and personal anecdotes. It includes rare, black and white footage of RL Burnside from 1974, disturbingly funny stories about touring told first hand by Iggy Pop and John Spencer Blues Explosion as well as an interesting encounter with Junior Kimbrough described by Bono from U2 and much more. This is not for the faint of heart. Read more

Review & Description

Japanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. Warner. 2009.Released immediately following the elaborate Crossroads box set, Journeyman is EC's way of feigning humility while cranking out the blues for his attentive audience. Featuring the help of famous sidemen George Harrison, Phil Collins, Robert Cray, Chaka Khan, and David Sanborn, Journeyman is less a superstar romp than a moderate collection of songs tastefully produced and economically performed. Flashes of Clapton's lead work burst through while his singing remains modest. The cover of "Before You Accuse Me" is heartfelt and while Clapton may at this point be incapable of delivering the down and dirty power of jukejoint blues, he still manages to find a little bit o' soul among the pickings. --Rob O'Connor Read more

Review & Description

Tierney Sutton is a genuine jazz singer, a clear-voiced soprano with sure pitch and diction who concentrates on musical substance. Her approach can suggest Sheila Jordan or Norma Winstone, and she's equally effective at quick bop, medium-swing tempos, and moody ballads. The "unsung heroes" she invokes are the great instrumentalists who have inspired her and whose compositions are seldom sung, like Joe Henderson ("Remember Me" is his "Recordame"), Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wayne Shorter. Her phrasing is often trumpet-like on the improvised solos, and she gets terrific support from a trio led by pianist Christian Jacob and guest soloists who include Stan Kenton veteran Buddy Childers on flügelhorn. There's an almost unearthly purity of vocals in her subtle version of "Spring Is Here," but the absolute highlight is the Jimmy Rowles tune "A Timeless Place (The Peacocks)," with lyrics by Winstone. It's a demanding line with difficult harmony that Sutton weaves perfectly with Jacob and Gary Foster on alto flute. --Stuart Broomer Read more

Afro Groove (Audio CD)

Afro Groove
Afro Groove (Audio CD)
By Magda Piskorczyk

Review & Description

In this double CD album Magda Piskorczyk invites the listeners to a musical journey through her closest sounds, cultures and traditions. She presents multicolour, dynamic and very personal collage, blending the music with the Afro-American roots (blues, soul, funk, jazz) and the ethnic rhythms or melodies, especially from the Western Africa.

MAGDA sings (mainly in English, but also in Tamashek, Bambara, Polish) and plays guitars: acoustic and bass. She regularly involves the audience in creating music together, especially the rhythm, and in spontaneous amusement. Magda is accompanied by her band: Aleksandra Siemieniuk - dobro and electric guitar, Marcin Jahr - drums, Adam Rozenman - percussion plus a special guest from the USA.

BILLY GIBSON is a harp virtuoso, energetic frontman and vocalist from Memphis where he got the title: 'The Prince of Beale Street'. He is 2009 winner of the very prestigious distinction for bluesmen (former W.C. Handy Award) Blues Music Award Instrumentalist Of The Year - Harmonica.
. . . . . ..
BILLY GIBSON and MAGDA PISKORCZYK met for the first time during Magda's visit in Memphis. In 2010 they gave 22 concerts in one month - in Poland, Germany and Czech Republic. . . . . . . . .

The first CD of 'AFRO GROOOVE' album presents almost 67 minutes of the concert recorded in Poland during this tour. In the second CD there are 3 bonus songs. 'Rzezb Mnie' is a ballad composed by Magda with a text of a recognized Polish poet Bogdan Loebl. The cover cartoons were made by Dariusz Pietrzak, cover design by Irek Graff and Magda Piskorczyk.

'Afro Groove' is the forth album of Magda Piskorczyk. She is a singer with a mature, low and unusual voice timbre. Described in France as 'la voix noire et au costume blanc' (Black voice in a white costume). She performs music of Afro-American and African heritage. She is a two-time Semifinalist of the IBC contest in Memphis. . . . . . . . . . . MAGDA has performed with many famous musicians, such as Bob Margolin, Bob Brozman, Slidin Slim, Seckou Keita and Greg Zlap. Deluxe Book with Album

Hugh Laurie will release his debut album 'Let Them Talk' on Warner Bros. Records. A glorious celebration of New Orleans blues, 'Let Them Talk' unites Laurie's musical talent with a very personal selection of standards and lost blues classics performed with his band of renowned musicians and some very special guest stars. Produced by Joe Henry and recorded at sessions in Los Angeles and New Orleans, 'Let Them Talk' sees Laurie on vocals and piano heading a team of musicians whose previous collective credits include work with artists as varied as Greg Allman, Solomon Burke, Robert Plant, kd lang, T-Bone Burnett, Alison Krause and John Legend. Together, they interpret and revive songs originally recorded by NOLA blues legends such as Lead Belly, Robert Johnson, Ray Charles and Memphis Slim. 'Let Them Talk' also features collaborations with the Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas and Sir Tom Jones on the little known 'Baby, please Make A Change'. Thomas also leads the vocals on 'John Henry', while Laurie's lifelong hero Dr. John provides a momentous collaboration on 'After You've Gone'. Another legend, the producer, musician and songwriter Allen Toussaint, contributes horn arrangements throughout. The special edition includes a beautiful bound 44-page booklet with exclusive photos and the CD includes three bonus tracks. Read more

Release Date: 11-JUL-1990The first album of the loose trilogy that also includes Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years, Swordfishtrombones marked a radical departure for Waits, whose avant-garde ambitions became plain not so much in his lyrics or subject matter--the songs here deal, as do his older albums, with hard life on the wrong side of the tracks and dreams of escape and transcendence--but in the music, a sound somewhere between German cabaret music from between the wars and contemporary Manhattan rush hour. Odd time signatures, unusual instrumentation (glass harmonicas and brake drums, among others), and Waits's barked vocals make this one of his most individualistic and challenging albums. --Daniel Durchholz Read more

Review & Description

This is Waits's most harrowing album ever, thanks not only to such heartwarming sentiments as "What does it matter, a dream of love or a dream of lies / We're all going to be in the same place when we die" but also to the ravaged, shamanistic croak with which he delivers them. Death hangs like a bad suit on songs like "Jesus Gonna Be Here," "The Ocean Doesn't Want Me," and "Murder in the Red Barn." But the album is musically entrancing and richly poetic--"Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?" Waits asks a perennially unfaithful lover in "Who Are You." There's also room for some foolishness, as with "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," which has been memorably covered by the Ramones, and a boozy sing-along (with Keith Richards), "That Feel." --Daniel DurchholzThe abnormal has become the norm for Tom Waits, so, once again, Bone Machine is laden with odd timbres, archaic acoustics, and raw vocals. This time, however, Waits has built his songs around a Harry Partch-inspired fascination with primitive percussion. With a crew of Northern California musicians along to add spare adornments, Waits fashions pretty, sentimental tunes ("A Little Rain," Whistle Down the Wind") and hellish stampedes of clanging metal and hoarse shouting ("Earth Died Screaming," "Let Me Get Up on It," the latter the 53-second distillation of Bone Machine quintessence-just Waits distorted bellowing and banging. Bone Machine is both appalling and appealing. There are elements to this album that seem designed to drive away the faint of heart, and then there are melodies that melt in your hand. --Steve Stolder Read more

Genre: ROCK/POPThe middle album of the trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is Waits's best overall effort. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl," "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love," "Time"). The album also contains the original version of "Downtown Train," which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The image of "rain dogs"--animals who've lost their way home because the rain has washed away their scent--is an appropriate symbol for the entire cast of characters Waits has brought to life over the years, and this album has thus far proved to be his most enduring effort. --Daniel Durchholz Read more

A Bothered Mind (Audio CD)

A Bothered Mind
A Bothered Mind (Audio CD)
By R. L. Burnside

Product Images

Review & Description

John Lennon once claimed that "the blues is a chair…the first chair," explaining the music's primacy in the grand scheme of things. That notion is richly underscored on this follow-up to late-blossoming North Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside's initial 1998 remix collection. While Kid Rock's rollicking duet cum roadhouse free-for-all on "My Name is Robert Too" further grounds his rootsy reinvention, Bay Area hip-hopper Lyrics Born lays a lugubrious guitar groove on "Goin' Down South" and kicks up "Someday Baby" with a word-tripping nod to Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues." But those flashy guest turns shouldn't distract from the real attraction here: Burnside's own earthy, rhythmically propulsive acoustic (the moody "Bird Without a Feather" source recording dates to 1968) and electric performances, as deftly refocused and punched up by producers Mike E. Clark and Tino Gross. Listeners familiar with Burnside's re-worked contributions to the hit Sopranos soundtrack and its follow-up will find this collection a rewarding shotgun wedding of something borrowed and something new--a smart, modern take on the blues. --Jerry McCulley Read more
