Crossroads (Kindle Edition)

Crossroads (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

The result of careful research, this stylish biography of infamous blues musician Robert Johnson reveals the real story behind the mythical talent that made him a musical legend. According to some, Robert Johnson learned guitar by trading his soul away to the Devil at a crossroads in rural Mississippi. When he died at age 27 of a mysterious poisoning, many superstitious fans came to believe that the Devil had returned to take his due. This diligent study of Johnson’s life debunks these myths, while emphasizing the effect that Johnson, said to be the greatest blues musician who ever lived, has had on modern musicians and fans of the blues. Since its publication in 2008, Crossroads has been hailed by critics and blues fans alike as the definitive biography of this most elusive of American icons.

"Anyone who is aware of Robert Johnson's contribution to blues and rock music will want this book. It is as true a picture of the man as we will ever have." —Blues Society of Tulsa

"The book you hold in your hands is perhaps the most accurate recital of the facts of the life of Little Robert Leroy Johnson, the King of Spades, The King of the Delta Blues Singers that you’re likely to come across for many years to come..." --Steve LaVere

"Crossroads is well researched, informative and easy to read. . . . An enjoyable read that separates the man from the myth." —Blues Review magazine

"Graves applies the lively narration of music journalism to this brief biography of Delta blues guitarist Robert Johnson." —Book News Inc.

"The most complete and accurate book so far on Robert Johnson . . . an interesting and absorbing book that not only will be of interest to new fans, but will fill in some gaps for longtime fans." —Blues Bytes online magazine

"Graves' study is well researched and entertaining, and worth a read by anyone interested in Johnson and his remarkable legacy." —Dirty Linen magazine

"This short book is an interesting study . . . of Robert Johnson's life but also in the legends surrounding his life and death. Graves is adept at retelling the facts." —BluesWax

"Graves'. . . aim in this brief but handy clearinghouse of a book is to separate fact from fiction and set the record straight, a job even Johnson's friends in the 1930s had trouble doing." —Memphis magazineThe result of careful research, this stylish biography of infamous blues musician Robert Johnson reveals the real story behind the mythical talent that made him a musical legend. Review & Description

Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.

Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."

Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord Read more

Meet Hindi Zahra and her original gently sense of melody. With a subtle, understated guitar accompaniment, a dash of gypsy guitar between the lines, and a hint of Blues but with a capital B. Intense, intimate, poetic vibrations, with a velvety feline timbre. The production and arrangements are her own, end-to-end, and already have the patina of maturity: a pared down sophisticated lady mood. A versatile multi-instrumentalist she has quietly, away from the limelight, gone about the business of building an authenticity that is there in her songs, always about love and people, very simply. Review & Description

Digitally remastered Japanese reissue of his top 40 1991 double live album for Duck/ Reprise in a miniaturized LP sleeve limited to the initial pressing only. All 15 tracks were recorded over 24 nights at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1990-91 & contains many of his best with Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and as a solo artist, including 'Badge', 'Bell Bottom Blues' and 'Wonderful Tonight'. Gatefold sleeve. 1999 release. Here's something for the Clapton fan who enjoys hearing him play in all manner of contexts. On this two-CD set, recorded over a 24-night stand at London's Albert Hall, Clapton performs with a stripped-down four-piece band; a more lushly arranged nonet, an all-star blues lineup featuring stellar guitarists Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan as well as legendary pianist Johnnie Johnson; and a full orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen. Most fans will find the blues segment the most endearing, but the album proves that Clapton is a blues-rock master who can excel in almost any setting. --Daniel DurchholzAs revered elder rock statesman Clapton has edged towards the pop mainstream, his superlative guitar work has become increasingly less prominent on his albums. So, it's nice to have a solid showcase for his instrumental brilliance on the live 2 CD 24 Nights, which captures the highlights of an extended 1990-1991 run at London's Royal Albert Hall. The album finds Clapton performing Cream classics, solo hits, and blues standards in a variety of different band formats: with a stripped-down quartet, an expanded nine-piece, a stellar blues ensemble (including fellow axe heroes Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan), and a full orchestra. The result is a fine showcase for the dazzling instrumental skills of one of rock's essential guitarists. --Scott Schinder Read more

The Blues Cookbook: A comprehensive piano method for learning how to play the Blues for intermediate pianists. (Kindle Edition)
By Laura Hoffman

Review & Description

This is a book of etudes written in the blues form for the intermediate piano student. It is designed to help develop finger strength and rhythmic coordination when used in a daily regimen. It will also help the student get aquatinted with the blues form and its scales, chords and patterns.

Blues music is possibly America's oldest art form, evolving from the chants and songs sung by the slaves in the South before the Civil War. The slaves from Africa brought with them a rich heritage of musical harmony and traditions of singing. The sang "field hollers" to each other to survive the long days of picking cotton in the hot sun. After they became free, many newly liberates Afro-Americans traveled north to find a better life in the cities that dotted the Mississippi river. The rode on the great American railroads and wrote songs about the trains like "Gonna Ride That Southern Railway Line". Over time, the form of these songs evolved into a fixed set of measures, the most popular being twelve bars long.

The twelve-bar-blues contains three four-bar phrases and is usually in the AAB form.

For example:

Goin' to Chicago, sorry but I can't take you
Goin' to Chicago, sorry but I can't take you
There ain't nothin' in Chicago a girl like you can do

The first line tells us a powerful story in one sentence; the second line repeats the message over different chords and the third line, or the "B" section, tell us why the composer feels the way he does. In other words, it's like a short play with a lot of meaning. The most important part of a blues song is that it's filled with strong feelings. This is a book of etudes written in the blues form for the intermediate piano student. The Blues Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
By Laura A. Hoffman

Review & Description

The Blues Cookbook is for piano students everywhere who want to learn how to play in the Blues style. The book is user friendly and is written by Laura Hoffman, a Chicago born Jazz and Blues veteran. This book is divided into five chapters separated by cardboard tabs, and can be started at any point the reader wishes to focus on. There is a chapter on licks, one on musical tools, and another one on arranging songs in a Blues style. The author has included a CD and copious examples of styles such as Shuffle Blues, Boogie-Woogie, and even stride bass. The songs are purposefully written in a variety of keys, and there are musical nods to notables such as Mary Lou Williams and Bessie Smith. The Blues Cookbook is engaging and contains instructional text. The CD really helps aspiring students, and a companion DVD is in the works. Read more

Review & Description

Recorded in 1968 when the Belfast-bred, blues-rock music legend Van Morrison was just 22 years old, Astral Weeks immediately received critical acclaim and continues to be cited as one of the greatest albums of the rock era. Subsequently the album has been ranked on numerous Best Albums of All Time lists, including #19 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the 40th Greatest Album Ever on VH-1's list in 2003. Both Astral Weeks and Moondance (Morrison's next album) were inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame.

Astral Weeks became a cult favorite and was seen almost as a religion to many artists. On November 7 and 8, 2008, four decades later, at the age 63, Van Morrison revisited Astral Weeks live in its entirety at the Hollywood Bowl, and delivered a jawdropping, awe-inspiring performance.

The first half of the show featured Morrison playing timeless classics that have made him a legend, while the second half was the breathtaking performance of the Astral Weeks album.Van Morrison did not simply re-create what he did 40 years ago in a NY studio, but instead took the songs to a dramatically higher contemporary level. The jazz-rooted compositions of Astral Weeks are poetic stories of young love and the quest to find one's place in life. They were, and remain, ideal source material for musical improvisation that gives way to the sense of wonder for which Morrison has always striven.

". . . transcendence is what Morrison has been after with his music from the beginning, and it's what he achieved frequently on Friday, when he played his watershed 1968 album Astral Weeks live in its entirety for the first time. The wondrous, youthful timbre of his voice then has evolved over the years into a richer, fuller instrument, with every bit of its remarkable elasticity very much intact." (L. A. Times) Read more

LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE - DVD MoviePart concert, part history lesson, part summit meeting, and all blues, Lightning in a Bottle puts a bright spotlight on this quintessential American music. There are some heavy hitters at work here, both behind the camera (Martin Scorsese executive produced, while the film was directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day and King Arthur) and especially in front of it, with a superb house band and a mind-boggling array of musicians (including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Solomon Burke, Keb' Mo', Macy Gray, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray, and John Fogerty, to name but a few) performing at New York's Radio City Music Hall in February, 2003. The idea was to trace the music from its beginnings; thus we get an African song (by Angelique Kidjo), some early gospel blues (the great Mavis Staples), acoustic Delta blues, and so on, right up to blues-drenched electric rock and even some rap (a riveting version of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" by Chuck D.). Virtually all of the immortals who defined the blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and even Jimi Hendrix, whose fiery style is re-enacted by Buddy Guy) enter the picture, either through vintage film clips or new performances of their songs. One might wish for more insight into the influence of the blues on jazz (Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit," sung here by India.Arie, is a fine song, but it's not a blues tune) or country, but overall, Lightning in a Bottle is an edifying and, most important, highly entertaining portrait of the music and its heritage. --Sam Graham Read more

In Session [Deluxe Edition CD/DVD] (Audio CD)

In Session [Deluxe Edition CD/DVD]
In Session [Deluxe Edition CD/DVD] (Audio CD)
By Albert King

Product Images

Review & Description

On December 6, 1983, legendary blues guitarist Albert King joined his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan on a Canadian sound stage for the live music television series In Session. Magic happened. The highly sought after video footage from that one-time renowned summit becomes available for the first time ever with the release of Stax Records' deluxe two-disc CD/DVD In Session.

The DVD contains three classic performances unavailable on the previously issued audio disc: "Born Under a Bad Sign," the landmark title track from Albert King's biggest Stax release written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones; Stevie Ray's "Texas Flood," the Larry Davis-penned title track of Vaughan's immortal debut album; and "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," made famous by Louis Jordan and later, Ray Charles.

"It was evident from the first choruses," writes liner notes author/musicologist Samuel Charters, "that they were playing for each other. And that was the best audience either of them could ever have. The music never lost its intensity, its quality of something very important being handed back and forth and there was time for Stevie and Albert to see where their ideas took them."

Accolades have showered upon this momentous encounter. "As a document of what was probably one of the greatest nights in the musical life of SRV, this belongs in the collection of every true fan," said the Austin American-Statesman. Sonic Boomers added, "Both men are gone now, but rare recordings like In Session remind us of a time when blues giants still walked the earth side by side." Elmore magazine called it "an indispensible part of any blues fan's collection." And BluesWax noted, "thank goodness, this disc lives on and on."

Now this previously unavilable visual document featuring two giants of American blues can be enjoyed by audiences the world over. Sadly, King and Vaughan would not share a stage together ever again. Vaughan, 31 years King's junior, died in a helicopter crash in the fog on the way back from a concert in 1990. King outlived him by two years, dying of a heart attack in 1992. They didn't meet often, and their careers took different paths. But we can all be grateful for that one long day in a television studio when sparks flew and this timeless performance was forever captured. Read more

The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Vol. 2
The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Vol. 2 (DVD)
By Willie Dixon

Review & Description

Reelin’ In The Years Productions, in association with Experience Hendrix, bring you the American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966 Volumes One & Two. The AFBF was an annual event that featured the cream of American blues musicians barnstorming their way across western Europe every fall from 1962 through 1966. Recorded live in a small TV studio in Germany, these historic and unseen performances have been lost for nearly 40 years. Filmed with superb camera work and pristine sound, each DVD contains 18 complete performances from the greatest blues musicians of all time. Captured during their heyday in an era of scant video documentation, these DVDs are truly one of the most unique and precious visual documents of the blues.

The American Folk Blues Festivals featured a dazzling array of talent that included such greats as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson playing alongside other legends such as T-Bone Walker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Memphis Slim and Big Mama Thornton to create the most significant group of blues artists ever assembled!Three songs by Howlin' Wolf are the highlight of this second set of blues performances recorded in the 1960s, when an extraordinary lineup of musicians (among the 18 tracks here are tunes by Lightnin' Hopkins, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and Big Mama Thornton) toured Europe, thrilling (among many others) the young Englishmen playing in bands like the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. As with Volume 1, the monaural sound and black-and-white video are superb, making the release of the footage four decades later even more welcome. And Wolf? He was still in his prime in '64, perhaps equaled only by Muddy Waters (who appears on the first volume). "Did you ever been in the groove?" he asks at one point. "Well, I'm gonna put you way down in the woods." That he does, and blues fans will be only too happy to tag along. --Sam Graham Read more

Green Onions
Green Onions (Audio CD)
By Booker T. & The MG's

Review & Description

Propelled by Booker T. Jones' smoky organ and the funky guitar bursts of Steve Cropper, "Green Onions" -- the first chart-topper by Booker T. & the MGs -- slithered across the 1962 airwaves, followed immediately by an album every bit as savory. Hot on the heels of that first MGs smash, here's a second helping, "Mo' Onions," as well as the exquisite pop delights of "Stranger on the Shore" and the unsurpassed after-hours smolder of "Behave Yourself." The original Green Onions LP by the peerless Booker T. & the MGs: exact LP reproduction available now from Sundazed, mastered from the absolute vintage analog tapes, and so lip-smacking delicious it'll make you cry. Beautiful Imperfection (Audio CD)

Review & Description

Asa blossomed on the international stage in 2007 with a self-titled soul-pop LP, highlighted by soon-to-become anthems "Jailer" and "Fire on the Mountain". An extended worldwide tour and 300 000 records later, the Nigerian artist is back with an album aiming straight to the heart: "Beautiful Imperfection". Sticking to her faithful values, Asa assembled the entourage she has worked with since her recording debuts. While new texts make room to a surprising and genuine display of inner emotions, Asa has intensely sharpened her musical tone as in infectious single "Be my man" rooted at the very core of trademark Stax and Motown productions. Asa is featuring Tiken Jah Fakoly on " Political war" song from his new album out September 20th. "Be my man" will be the first taster to "Beautiful Imperfection", set to release from October 25th throughout Continental Europe. Read more
